Hazard Mitigation Plan

About the Hazard Mitigation Plan

New Mexico Tech is in the process of developing a Multi-Jurisdictional Natural Hazard Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan with Socorro County, City of Socorro, and the Village of Magdalena. The Plan is aimed at raising awareness and reducing the loss of life and property from natural disasters in the County and the New Mexico Tech campus.

In October, 2004, a hail storm in the city of Socorro resulted in a loss for New Mexico Tech of $7,000,000. The primary purpose of the planning effort is to identify potential risk areas, such as severe storm conditions, and develop plans to make our communities more resistant to damage from natural hazards.

Unlike emergency operations plans or disaster preparedness, this plan seeks to develop ways to lessen the impact of natural disasters on the community's resources through strategic, long range planning. The overall goal of the Multi-Jurisdictional Natural Hazard Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan is to save lives and reduce property damage. Please leave your comment or input: gchavez@admin.nmt.edu
