SOCORRO, N.M., Oct. 3, 2005 – New Mexico Tech sophomore Robert Jones died Saturday morning, October 1, of injuries sustained in a single-car rollover accident which occurred about four miles north of Socorro. He was en route to his home in Los Lunas when the accident occurred.

Jones, who was known to his friends as "Robbie," was a full-time student who was majoring in mechanical engineering at the state-supported research university.

“From what we’ve garnered from his friends and professors here at New Mexico Tech, we understand that Robert Jones was an outstanding student who made a lasting impression on all who knew him,” said New Mexico Tech President Daniel H. López.

“The entire campus community shares in the loss of this exceptional young man, and we extend our thoughts and prayers to his parents and the rest of his family during this profound personal tragedy,” López added.

Robert graduated as valedictorian from Los Lunas High School in 2004. While at Los Lunas High School, Robbie excelled not only in academics but also in swimming, jazz and marching band as well. He went on to attend New Mexico Tech to major in mechanical engineering with the intent of pursuing a master's degree in aerospace engineering. While at New Mexico Tech, Robert was a member of the National Honor Society, the Math Club, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. During the summer, Robert worked as a head lifeguard at the Los Lunas High School pool.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Robert Jones memorial fund at New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union. Funds will be used to support the band/swimming programs at Los Lunas High School. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE 843-6333
