President Announces Hiring Of New Executive Assistant

SOCORRO, N.M. June 11, 2009 -- New Mexico Tech President Dr. Daniel H. Lopez announced Thursday that Lala Trujillo-Garcia has been hired as his new executive assistant.

Lucy Chavez is retiring after 43 years of service at New Mexico Tech. Former President Dr. Stirling Colgate hired Chavez in 1966. She worked as the executive assistant to four full-time presidents and two interim presidents.

“Lucy will truly be missed on campus,” Dr. Lopez said. “She has always been an exemplary executive assistant. She has efficiently and effectively served New Mexico Tech presidents and I am honored to have worked with her for the past 16 years.”

Chavez was honored with a special award at the President’s Club banquet in May. She was also recognized during commencement.

Trujillo-Garcia worked as operations manager for the Department of Workforce Solutions for nearly 17 years, reporting directly to the cabinet secretary. In addition to her duties within the department, she also served as the Department’s legislative liaison to the Legislative Finance Committee, the Governor’s office and the Department of Finance and Administration.

Lopez said Trujillo-Garcia has a stellar background for stepping into the new job.

“Lala’s experience in government will help her make the transition to higher education,” he said. “In addition to her professional skills, she also has the temperament and demeanor to fit in well at New Mexico Tech.”

Lopez said the university received 10 applications for the job. Trujillo-Garcia was tops among four finalists.

She begins work Monday, June 15, and will work with Chavez through her last day, Tuesday, June 30.
