SOCORRO, N.M., March 30, 2009 – The cable TV phenomenon MythBusters will shatter the airwaves with impacts and explosions in a two-hour special Wednesday, April 8 – and New Mexico Tech will be center stage.

The Discovery Channel is airing promotional trailers that show brief snippets of a high-speed collision filmed at Tech’s test range. The trailer also shows the stars Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage in a bunker at the EMRTC test range reacting with amazement to a test.

The two-hour episode, titled “Demolition Derby,” kicks off the seventh season of the popular show. The MythBusters will test five myths, including “Fan Revisit: Car Pancaked Between Two Trucks.”

This myth had been tested twice before – but never with the facilities and capabilities that New Mexico Tech offers.

Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage interviewed Tech Vice President Dr. Van Romero for the show. Several staff scientists from Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center set up the experiment under the watchful eyes of Hyneman and Savage.

New Mexico Tech will be featured again Wednesday, April 22, in an episode titled “Bananas and Diamonds.” Also filmed partly at New Mexico Tech, the “Diamonds” portion of the episode again features Romero and EMRTC personnel.

The “Diamonds” testing features the show stars Tory Belleci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara. EMRTC has garnered a bit of fame (or notoriety) for developing an explosive method for manufacturing industrial-grade diamonds.

To see the explosive experiments, tune in to the Discovery Channel at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, and Wednesday, April 22.
