SOCORRO, N.M., April 1, 2006 – New Mexico Tech and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School have entered into an Educational and Research Partnership Agreement designed to enhance education opportunities and to encourage joint research and development projects at both institutions of higher education.

Under the terms of the newly forged partnership, qualified graduate students, whether enrolled at the state research university in Socorro or at the Navy’s academic institution in Monterey, Calif., will eventually be able to take distance-education classes, as well as to collaborate on research programs of mutual interest.

This agreement has been five years in the making; yet, signing off on this partnership between New Mexico Tech and the Naval Postgraduate School only marks Step One in the process,” said Peter F. Gerity, vice president for academic affairs at New Mexico Tech.

Officially entering into this partnership agreement was pivotal, since it has now provided us with the organizational structure necessary to embark on this long-term collaboration,” Gerity added.

In addition, the scope of the Education and Research Partnership Agreement also serves to encourage New Mexico Tech and Naval Postgraduate faculty, staff, and graduate students to become actively and cooperatively involved in mentoring and academic advising programs, curricula development, enhanced learning experiences, joint research proposals, and visiting professor lectures, workshops and campus visits.
