SOCORRO, N.M., July 14, 2006 – Hai Xiao, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at New Mexico Tech, recently was selected as an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator.

Xiao was one of seven university researchers selected earlier this year from a nationwide group of 238 applicants who submitted supporting materials and research proposals for funding awards of up to $100,000 per year from the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Va.

“Dr. Xiao emerged successfully from a very competitive pool because of his academic achievements, his ability to contribute to the strength of the nation’s research and development, and the commitment to him expressed by New Mexico Tech administrators,” said Rear Admiral William E. Landay III, Chief of Naval Research.

“We believe that ONR Young Investigators, including Dr. Xiao, are among the best and brightest young academic researchers this country has to offer,” Landay added.

Through the research grant provided by the ONR Young Investigators Program, Xiao’s research project, titled “Understanding the Optical Behaviors of Zeolite Thin Films and Nanoparticles to Develop Micro Chemical Sensors: Bridging the Nanoscale and the Microscale,” will be eligible for three years of financial and additional support.
