SOCORRO, N.M., Jan. 11, 2006  – A major professional golf tournament that has been held in June on the New Mexico Tech Golf Course for more than 45 years has found a new corporate sponsor—Socorro Springs Brewing Company.

The local brew pub and restaurant will now be the major sponsor of its namesake Socorro Springs Open Golf Tournament, an annual weeklong professional and amateur golfing event that takes the place of the former Conrad Hilton Open.

New Mexico Tech Head Golf Pro Russell Moore recently announced the closing of a three-year, $45,000 sponsorship agreement between the university and Socorro Springs owners that he says gives the golf tournament even more of a local identity.

“We’re really excited about having signed the new sponsorship agreement with Socorro Springs,” Moore says, “particularly since the owners are both New Mexico Tech alumni. . . . It’s worked out to be such a complementary fit between a local business and New Mexico Tech Golf Course.”

The new Socorro Springs Open, which is fully sanctioned by the Sun Country PGA and the Sun Country Golf Association, is scheduled to get underway the week of June 4-10, 2006.

The stroke-play golf tournament will include a senior golf professionals three-day event, a one-day pro-am, and a professional and amateur three-day competition.

The world’s longest and toughest hole in golf, the infamous “Elfego Baca Shoot,” which was a mainstay of the now defunct Hilton Open, will remain associated with the Socorro Springs Open as part of the annual event.

In addition to Socorro Springs Brewing Company, New Mexico Tech and the City of Socorro will continue to be major sponsors of the golf tournament.
