Tech Cricket Club Wins Inaugural Match of UNM League

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. November 10, 2015 – The New Mexico Tech Cricket Club participated in its first ever tournament on October 31, winning the inaugural match of the league. The Tech club defeated the Team Blues of UNM by 23 runs.

The Tech Cricket Club is (standing from left) Sai Krishna, Sidharth Arunkumar, Varun Rao P R, Mayank Roy, Atharv, Primal Silva, Amrudyuthi Swamy, and Sherin B V. Kneeling is Bhavik Bhakta.

Losing the toss and batting first in the 12 over game, Tech openers Sidharth Arunkumar and Primal Silva gave a good start to the innings by scoring quick runs in the first four overs, before Sidharth got out. A decent contribution by middle order batsmen Mayank Roy, Amruth Swarmy, Bhavik Bhakta and Atharv and some slog hitting by captain Varun Rao P.R. guided the team to a total of 86 for 6 in 12 overs.

Defending a decent target, Team Blues lost early wickets, thanks to the magical spell of Sai Krishna, who bagged three wickets in his first two overs. Supporting him from the other end, Sherin B V and Bhavik kept the opponents under pressure with their disciplined bowling. Sherin got two important wickets, one of the strike batsman and the other of the opposition team captain. These two wickets turned around the match in favor of Tech.

Sai Krishna got a wicket in his last over, taking a total of four wickets for 12 runs in his spell of three overs. To finish off the game, Primal and Varun both bagged a wicket each. Mayank and Amruth (wicket keeper) both caught 2 each. Varun was declared man of the match for his 16 runs, 1 wicket and a run out.

The Tech club played a second game against Aspen 1, the champions of the Colorado Cricket League 2015. Aspen won the game by 9 wickets.

Tech will play the next two league games on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Johnson Field in Albuquerque. Stop by to support the team, if you are in Albuquerque.
