Demolition of Old Bureau Beginning Soon

SOCORRO, N.M. October 27, 2015 – The demolition of the old Bureau of Geology building is beginning this week. Facilities Management crews have put a fence around the building, which will be in place for the duration of the demolition and new construction – about 14 months.

Asbestos abatement will take place first, then the building will be leveled. Demolition and construction work will eliminate about 15 parking spots on the west side of the old Bureau. Facilities Management staff are holding a pre-bid meeting for demolition Wednesday, Oct. 28, with bids due Thursday, Nov. 5. The razing of the building is expected to begin in late November. The full project will be done before the holiday break. The site will be the new home for the Chemistry Department building.

New Mexico Tech has issued a request for proposals to construct the new building. Contractors have until November 18 to submit proposals. The Board of Regents will consider the construction bids at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 30. Site work for the new building is expected to commence before the end of the year and will continue throughout 2016.

The new building will be about 40,000 square feet and will include native landscaping and a picnic/study area between Workman Center and the new building.
