Fall Career Fair Boasts New Exhibitors

SOCORRO, N.M. September 9, 2015 – The Fall 2015 Career Fair is shaping up to be another excellent opportunity for Tech students to explore jobs, graduate schools and internship options.

Tristine Hayward, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, anticipates more than 45 companies; universities and agencies will be attending the event this spring. The semi-annual event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Fidel Center.

Hayward said this year’s presenters have jobs, co-ops, fellowships and internships available for students in every academic department on campus.

The job market nationally – and globally – is booming, with more and more jobs opening each quarter. Hayward pointed out that 22 Fortune 500 companies have visited Tech to recruit new hires over the past year.

“Employers know they can find the best and brightest students at New Mexico Tech,” Hayward said. “Recruiters also are aware of the rankings and accolades that Tech earns, such as the recent rankings released in USA Today. The U.S. economy continues to improve and there are more and more jobs available for recent graduates. This is a great time to be entering the workforce with a degree from New Mexico Tech.”

In addition to the 45 exhibitors, four other companies will be on campus to conduct job interviews with students. Those companies are Mewbourne Petroleum, Google, BHP Billiton, and Peabody Energy. For the complete list of information sessions, go to http://www.nmt.edu/information-sessions-a-interviews.

Students can prepare themselves for the Career Fair in several ways. First, students should research the companies in attendance and what their specialties are. Hayward encourages students to bring résumés and dress professionally to the fair.

The Career Closet, located in the Student Services offices, is available for students who need professional clothing for the fair.  The lending closet has men and women’s professional suites, ties and shoes. Check out is free but come early for best selection.

The Student Affairs Office is also hosting four workshops to help students prepare for the fair. Résumé and cover letter writing workshops were held Thursday, Sept. 3.

A Company Research Workshop workshop is at noon and 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, in Fidel 262. This workshop is especially important for first-timers. Topics include proper dress, introductions, what to expect and free personal business cards for those who attend.

An interviewing skills workshop will begin at noon Thursday, Sept. 10, in Fidel 262. This workshop is important for anyone who is seriously considering an internship or employment. It will be repeated at 5 p.m. that day.

A flash résumé review sessions is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, in the Fidel Center atrium. Students are encouraged to stop by for an impromptu look at their resumes.

“This is very helpful to students who are very busy and don’t have much time to sit and chat about their resumes,” Hayward said. “We give it a look over and the students can make the necessary changes without much fuss.”

There will be free food at the workshops, but students should RSVP to careerservices@admin.nmt.edu so that sufficient food can be ordered.

“We are here to help students make the transition from student to a career,” Hayward said. “These workshops and the career fairs are important events to help students. I encourage Techies to take advantage of the services we offer because they do work.”
