Etiquette Dinner Offers Professional Advice

SOCORRO, N.M. March 12, 2014 – Which spoon to use? What is appropriate attire? What’s the appropriate manner to eat pasta?

The Career Services Office will answer all those questions and many more at the annual Etiquette Dinner and Fashion Show on Thursday, March 27.

“Students can expect to learn how to handle themselves in a dining atmosphereand how to present themselves in the best manner possible,” said Nicole Gayer, Career Services Coordinator. “If you have a great cover letter, resume and references, but you don’t make a successful first impression at a dinner or in a meeting, that’s a real drawback.”

Techies – upperclass students and those with internships in particular– are encouraged to attend the event in the third floor ballroom of the Fidel Center. The event starts at 6 p.m. and students must register beforehand. Capacity is limited to about 80 students. Members of two campus clubs – Society of Women Engineers and the men’s rugby team – will model various modes of apparel that are appropriate in different business situations.

 “The interview is more than just the time you’re sitting down with the employer,” Director of Student Services Lillian Armijo said. “Students need to recognize that the interview starts when they enter the parking lot and doesn’t end until they drive away. This is somethingthey should keep in mind because they are being evaluated by potential employers.”

In addition to instructions on how to navigate a place setting and how to approach difficult-to-eat food, guest speaker Marty Apodaca, UNM Career Facilitator will also discuss what foods to avoid and which dishes to consider.

“Students at one time or another will be faced with these situations,” Gayer said. “They need to know how to handle themselves appropriately.”

The cost is one meal swipe or $9. The meal will include a first course of vegetable soup and a whole loaf of bread, followed by a salad course. The main course will be a choice of chicken cordon bleu or the vegetarian option of pasta primavera. Dessert will be tiramisu.
