Golden Key International Honor Society Inducts New Members

SOCORRO, N.M. March 11, 2014 – The Golden Key International Honor Society held its semi-annual new member induction ceremony at New Mexico Tech on Sunday, March 9. The club focuses on embodying three major pillars of excellence: academics, leadership, and service. Several new members were inducted and honored for their outstanding academics. Inductees and members must be in the top 15 percent of their class to be invited to join Golden Key. Once members, the society offers many scholarship and networking opportunities.


The new inductees, existing members and officers and faculty advisors for the Tech chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society at the induction ceremony Sunday, March 9, on campus.


Members were also pleased to award honorary memberships to Dr. Michael Heagy and Dr. Virginia Chang. Dr. Heagy and Dr. Chang were recognized for their services to New Mexico Tech. and the community of Socorro. Dr. Warren Ostergren of the Mechanical Engineering Department was announced as the club's second faculty advisor. The other faculty advisor, Dr. Jeff Altig from the Chemistry Department, was recognized at their last ceremony in September 2013.

The club has participated in Make A Difference Day by painting fences at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Socorro. Members also recently got together to walk dogs at the animal shelter. Soon, the club will volunteer in Albuquerque atRoboRAVEInternational 2014.

Club secretary Jessica Avila went to the Regional Summit at El Paso where the Tech chapter was honored with the principle award for fostering and encouraging Golden Key Membership on campus. The New Mexico Tech Chapter was chartered by current president Oluwaseun Ogunro in the spring of 2013. This year’s inductees are Benjamin Schilling, Brandon Gehris, Sydney Andrews, Myissa Weiss, Jared Canright, Anthony Giljum, Katey Thomas, Kwame Frempong and Jasmine Hoo.

Chapter president Oluwaseun Ogunro said, "We follow the organization’s motto, which is ‘At Golden Key, we are more than good students; we are scholars. We believe in the power of knowledge to transform lives and change situations for the better. We enjoy academic challenges and strive for excellence in our fields. We are not bookish; we are learned.’"

Golden Key will be having an information desk at the Fidel Center from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, March 26 and 27. Students are welcome to ask questions about the honor society or contact the club at golden@nmt.edu.
