Dr. John Meason, the director of Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center, presented the awards prior to Senior Design Class on Thursday, August 30. Meason congratulated Heister and Bayley and encouraged students to get to know about ITEA.

Bayley said he was excited to learn that he got the award.

“I’m a non-traditional student, so for me to receive a scholarship is very helpful,” he said. “It allows me not to worry about money.”

Originally from Pennsylvania, Bayley worked as a plumber for 12 years before “finally getting the guts to go back to school,” he said.

He is studying explosives and hopes his career plans involve work at Sandia National Laboratory.

Heister is a 2010 graduate of New Mexico Tech who is now pursuing his master’s in mechatronics. He went to high school at Hope Christian School in Albuquerque.

“ITEA seems like a great opportunity to learn from many different engineers working in various fields,” he said. “This scholarship will help me a lot with graduate tuition.”

Heister hopes to work with the U.S. Navy on nuclear propulsion and submaries.
