Fall Career Fair Features New Workshops, More Interviews

SOCORRO, N.M. September 5, 2012 – The Fall 2012 Career and Graduate School Fair is shaping up to be among the biggest ever, with several new recruiters attending.

Christina Anthony, Career Services Coordinator, said she’s expecting a huge turnout of students and exhibitors. With two weeks remaining until the event, 46 exhibitors have signed up. New companies include Honda Research and Development in Ohio; Leprino Foods of Roswell; Esterline Defense in Coachella, Calif; Puppet Labs of Portland, Ore.; Microsoft (returning after a 10 year absence); and Occidental Petroleum, an international company.

“Our students are in high demand,” she said. “Tech grads stand out compared to students from other universities. Even though the job market is still tight, we’re not as affected as other schools.”

More companies this year will be conducting interviews on campus after the Fair. Sixteen companies will conduct interviews on September 20 and 21. Six more will return in October to interview students. The complete schedule is below and on the website calendar.

Anthony has also expanded the offerings of workshops to help students prepare for the Career Fair. She has added two “flash resume review” sessions and a reception for students and recruiters. The flash resume reviews will be 5-minute reviews during the lunch hours in the Fidel Atrium on the two days before the Career Fair.

The Career Services Office will have a resume-writing workshop, an interviewing workshop, Career Cab (based on the TV show Cash Cab), and a general workshop on preparing for the Career Fair. Check the online calendar for the complete schedule.

“These workshops help students prepare,” Anthony said. “There are always things you can do to improve yourself and stand out. Students can be uncomfortable with walking up to a recruiter and speaking to them, but preparation can make a big difference in the impression students make. In addition, the Meet The Recruiters will be a more relaxed setting so students can have more meaningful conversations.”

Registration is required for that event and will be limited. Students must also have a minimum 3.0 GPA to attend.

Anthony said to remember that Career Fair is not just for upperclassmen; freshmen and sophomores will find internship and co-op opportunities as well.

“There’s value for all students to go,” she said. “Some employers like to hire freshmen and keep them coming back every summer.”

The Career Fair booklet will include a new section that lists exhibitors by the type of opportunities available – from internships and cooperative education positions through full-time career-track employment.
