First Week Full Of Activities For Techies

SOCORRO, N.M. August 17, 2012 – New Mexico Tech is bursting at the seams and has plenty of activities to keep the Techie population entertained and engaged to start the new semester.

The residence halls open today (Friday, August 17) and activities are planned for students throughout the day. The unofficial count of new students, as of Friday, Aug. 17, is 330 freshmen and 84 transfer students, well above last year’s count, with registration not yet complete.

The Student Government Association is giving away Snow Cones at Fidel Center for a “Meet the SGA” event. Two barbecues are planned: undergraduates are invited to the Athletic Field for food and games at 5 p.m.; the Graduate Studies Office is hosting a barbecue and potluck on the quad near Brown Hall at the same time.

Saturday kicks off with orientation for new students at Macey Center, with a welcome from Vice President Melissa Jaramillo-Fleming. New students will also get the list of items to collect for the Scavenger Hunt. Returning students can pick up the list at the gym.

Student services offices are open in the afternoon Saturday, while the Bookstore will be open all day. More Snow Cones are available at La Raj (the patio outside the gym) in the afternoon. Saturday closes with a pool party and more barbecue in the evening. Student can get giveaways and prizes. Also, the Society of Women Engineers is hosting a Cardboard Regatta during the pool party. Students are invited to build cardboard boats and race them. Winners will be awarded prizes.

Sunday features tours of the Very Large Array in the afternoon. Those interested should be at the Swim Center before 11 a.m. Skeen Library is hosting a get-to-know-you event all afternoon. Students are invited to an indoor putt-putt tournament with complimentary refreshments and prizes.

Campus Drive will be blocked off in the evening for a block party … and more barbecue! Students can get more prizes at the Block Party.

Monday is set aside for registration and convocation. At 4 p.m., new students are invited to Macey Center for the official welcoming ceremony. After dinner, a Foam Party will be held in between Fidel Center and the Gym. Come play in foam!

Tuesday is the first day of classes, with the Scavenger Hunt concluding at 4:48 p.m. at the Athletic Field.

Wednesday’s activity is movie night at the outdoor pavilion north of the gym.

Comedy Night is at Macey Center on Thursday, featuring the guitar-playing comic Chris Newberg beginning at 7 p.m.

Friday features more “Fun in the Sun” at the pavilion north of the gym in the evening.

Students are invited to visit and tour the Magdalena Ridge Observatory on Sunday, August 26. The Observatory includes a 2.4-meter telescope and an interferometer that is under construction. Meet at the Swim Center at 2 p.m. for the tour.
