The Class of 2012 will officially note the completions of their degrees at 9 a.m. Saturday.

More than 300 individuals have earned degrees since last year’s graduation ceremony, including 202 bachelor’s, 90 master’s and 20 Ph.D.’s.

For those unable to attend, the ceremony will be broadcast live over the Internet by the Distance Education division. Click here for live broadcast.

Tech is providing other perks for graduates. Videographers from Distance Education will be on hand to record messages from the  members of the Class of 2012. Students are welcome to send greetings to family member who couldn’t attend the event, “thank you”s to instructors, farewells or other messages. This video will be seen live and will be available later online along with the commencement recording. Graduates wanting to record video seek out the videographers after the ceremony.

Also, the Alumni Office is sponsoring free photo sessions for graduates and their families both before and after the ceremony.  Photographers will be set up on the quad near the gymnasium. Students can get free prints beginning at 7:30 a.m. and again after the ceremony

The event is open to the public and will be on the lawn between Brown Hall and the Skeen Library.

The top four student awards will be announced at commencement. The Brown and Cramer awards are for the top undergraduates. The Langmuir and Founders Award are for the top graduate students.

Two faculty members will receive awards. Dr. Phil Kyle of the Earth and Environmental Science Department will receive the Distinguished Researcher Award. Dr. Frank Huang of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department will receive the Distinguished Teaching Award.

The Student Association, the Graduate Student Association and the Alumni Association will each present their annual awards as well.

The public is welcome to join an informal reception for the Class of 2012 on the south side of Brown Hall immediately following the ceremony.

All those who attend -- both graduates and guests -- will receive special sun-viewing glasses intended to be used during the annular eclipse that will happen the following weekend, at about 7 p.m. Sunday, May 20.

Graduation weekend includes several other special events for alumni, the Class of 2012 and the community.

Alumni and the Class of 2012 are invited to a special reception at the golf course pavilion from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Class of 2012 is invited to blow up their memorabilia that they'd rather forget. (Alarm clocks and text books have proven to be popular items in recent years.) The Advancement Office and Vice President of Research Dr. Van Romero are organizing this event for 2 p.m. Friday. Any graduate interested in participating should call (575) 835-5616.
