Beard-Growing Contest Returns for 49ers

by Kathy Hedges

SOCORRO – The beard-growing contest, a classic feature of 49ers Celebrations of the past, makes its return for the 2007 event.

Some champion beards

On Saturday, Oct. 20, judging and presentation of prizes for Best Beard will take place on Socorro’s historic Plaza.

That means, guys, the time to start growing is NOW!

Prizes will be given in the categories of longest, most creative, and best historical beard, and Best New Mexico Tech entry.

The contest is open to anyone capable of growing a beard: New Mexico Tech students, faculty, and staff, Socorro residents, visiting alumni, and anyone else who cares to participate.

To enter, just e-mail your intent to Carol Lynn Tiegs at ctiegs@admin.nmt.edu (or call her at 575.835.5292) and then show up in front of the Gazebo on the Plaza at noon on Saturday, October 20 for the judging.

Prizes are being provided by Dr. Van Romero, who is both a New Mexico Tech alumnus and vice president for Research and Economic Development.
