Bureau Publication Wins New Mexico Book Award, Dec. 7, 2007

SOCORRO, N.M., Dec. 6, 2007 - The popular geologic guide High Plains of Northeastern New Mexico—A Guide to Geology and Culture, recently published by the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, in Socorro, was among the winners of the 2007 New Mexico Book Awards, receiving the highest award in the travel category. Finalists and winning books were chosen from 33 categories. A second bureau book, Mining in New Mexico, was a finalist in the reference category. The 2007 winners were announced at the New Mexico Book Awards banquet, November 9, in Albuquerque. New Mexico authors Rudolfo Anaya and Tony Hillerman also were honored at the banquet with special Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The annual New Mexico Book Awards recognize the best in New Mexico books. This year’s 359 entries, representing both small regional publishers and large publishing companies from all over the U.S., were judged by a distinguished panel of 75 to 85 scholars, booksellers, and librarians. Organized by the New Mexico Book Co-op, the New Mexico Book Awards are sponsored by abqArts magazine, Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System, Albuquerque The Magazine, Around 505 magazine, Borders Book Stores, LPD Press & Rio Grande Books, New Mexico Book Association, New Mexico Humanities Council, New Mexico State Library, Portales Public Library and Portales Chapter of the Friends of the Library, Rio Rancho Public Library, Santa Fe Public Library/Friends of Santa Fe Public Library, Sunbelt Shows/Fiery Foods, Tradici√≥n Revista magazine, and WordHarvest Writers Workshop.

An exhibit of all the winning books will be organized by the New Mexico State Library and will travel to libraries across the state. Winning books will be on display at the Rio Rancho main library on Loma Colorado as well. All Borders Book Stores in New Mexico will display winning books through January, and Borders will host several book signing events for the winning authors from the end of January to the end of April.
