Is It Possible to Embrace the Earth and Embrace Energy?

March 15, 2007 (Albuquerque)—Through a statewide student speech contest, industry, education, government and civic groups are joining forces to identify New Mexico’s future stars of the energy industry while helping keep these great minds here in New Mexico.

CARE (Citizens’ Alliance for Responsible Energy), a New Mexico-based nonprofit organization, has organized a statewide student speech contest that will award more than $10,000 in scholarship monies to the college students who can best articulate the reality of today’s energy needs while emphasizing that energy solutions and environmental concerns can coexist.

The regional round of competitions will begin next week, with the first one taking place at New Mexico Tech (MSEC 101) on Monday, March 19 from 4-6 p.m., where four students will be competing for two $1,000 regional awards. Similar competitions will be held later at the University of New Mexico on March 21, from 3-5 p.m. and at New Mexico State University on March 28, from 4-6 p.m.

Through this speech contest, CARE will raise awareness for New Mexico’s position as a leader in fulfilling America’s energy needs. Most New Mexicans are unaware of the fact that we are a major player in the national energy community.

The CARE Statewide Student Speech Contest was open to all college students but specifically targeted juniors and sophomores in the chemical or petroleum engineering majors. In addition to the targeted fields, the students who have entered come from a variety of majors including management, communication and nuclear engineering. CARE provided the students with a list of proposed topics to give them inspiration but most students have developed their own ideas.

The final competition will kick off Earth Day Celebrations. It is being held April 19 at the State Land Office in Santa Fe. All six finalists will give their presentations before a panel of judges made up of industry leaders, government representatives, professional speakers and civic group decision makers. The winning presenter will receive the $5000 Embrace Scholarship. All final presenters will be “showcasing” their skills in front of New Mexico’s energy industry leaders who are looking to hire students for internships and ultimately fulltime employment. Many of the presenters may be selected to give their presentations to civic organizations throughout the state.

Members of the public and media are invited to both the regional and the final competitions.
