Socorro's First "Community Yard Sale" Set for August 18

SOCORRO, N.M., July 11, 2007 – Socorro is scheduled to have its first “Community Yard Sale” on Saturday, August 18, 2007. The community wide event will be centered mainly on the Socorro Plaza, in conjunction with the weekend Farmer’s Market.

The Community Yard Sale will include food and arts & crafts vendors, along with entertainment in the gazebo and activities for children. Socorro businesses are also being encouraged by event sponsors to open up their doors and actively participate by holding Sidewalk Sales throughout town.

With New Mexico Tech’s New Student Registration Day being held on Friday, August 17, and regular Registration Day scheduled for August 20, Socorro’s biggest yard sale ever promises to be a perfect time for Tech students to pick up some of those remaining needed items.

“It is also a great time for returning students to get rid of unwanted or no longer–needed–things that have accumulated over the semesters and are really no longer of use,” said Deborah Dean, coordinator of the event. “What is that old saying, ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure?’”

The city wide sale is a part of the Keep Socorro Beautiful Campaign, which is an affiliate of New Mexico Clean & Beautiful Campaign. The program is designed to deal with the issues of litter control, beautification, recycling, graffiti, and weed eradication.

The Community Yard Sale is sponsored by the City of Socorro, in partnership with the local Farmer’s Market. Organizers hope that this will become an annual event here in Socorro.

“I think it is good for the community and tourism,” said Dean, who also works as the tourism director for the City of Socorro.

The Socorro County Chamber of Commerce is also involved by encouraging its business members to participate in Sidewalk Sales.

The event will run from 8 a.m. until noon; however, if there is a bigger turn out than expected (and people can handle the heat) it may well run longer. Yard sale vendor spaces currently are available for $5; food vendor spaces are $25; and arts & crafts
vendor spaces are $5 for the day or can participate in the Farmer’s Market or $25 for the season. For more information on the upcoming Community Yard Sale, contact Dean at (505) 835-8927.
