Harold Runnels Memorial Scholarship

Harold Runnels was a U. S. Congressman who represented New Mexico from Jan. 3, 1971 until his death on Aug. 5, 1980, in New York City. Runnels was born in Dallas on March 17, 1924. In 1951, he moved to Lovington, N.M., and entered the petroleum business. He was a partner in Southland Supply Co. in 1952, formed Runnels Mud Co. in 1953, and RunCo Acidizing & Fracturing Co. in 1964. He founded the Permian Basin Petroleum Association in 1960 and served as a member of the New Mexico Senate from 1960 to 1970. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

After he passed away, an organization called the Harold Runnels Congressional Club of Roswell donated funds for an annual scholarship to be awarded to a New Mexico resident.
