New Students

Welcome to the Office of Disability Services!

Mission Statement

Disability Services provides accommdations and support for the educational development of students with disabilities. We strive to improve understanding and acceptance of students with disabilities throughout NMT community.  Our mission is accomplished through:

    1. Direct assistance to students to encourage and enhance their independence
    2. Ongoing cooperative efforts to develop and maintain an accessible physical environment, and
    3. Educational efforts to creat a supportive psychological environment so students can achieve their educational objectives.

A cooperative relationship is maintained with relevant campus departments to ensure New Mexico Tech complies with federal and state regulations regarding students with disabilities.

New Mexico Tech’s Office of Counseling and Disability Services (OCDS) makes every effort to ensure that appropriate and reasonable accommodations are provided to students with documented disabilities, which substantially limit one or more major life activities. Accommodations will be provided to students with disabilities to enable students to meet institutional standards without compromising the Academic Integrity of the course, program, assignment or activity.

Disability Services strive to provide accommodations to ensure equal access to opportunity, for students with documented disabilities. A student is an incoming freshman with a signed acceptance letter or anyone registered for classes with New Mexico Tech (NMT). Request for accommodation may take up to four weeks for approval or denial. Meeting with the Office of Counseling and Disability as soon as possible before the start of the semester is recommended

Disability services at the post-secondary education level are handled quite differently than they are in elementary, middle and secondary school.  We follow the regulations of Secion 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990. The student has many more responsibilities in procuring accommodations at the post- secondary level. It is important if you have a disability, for which yoy may need accommodating, that you contact the OCDS as soon as possible so that the office can start working with you. Our goal is to be prepared with your accommodations when you start classes. This is an area where being proactive is very important.

Please contact Counseling and Disability before your campus visit to set up a meeting to discuss the process for accommodations at the Univeristy level.  You may set a meeting via phone 575-835-6619 or email disablity@nmt.edu. During busy times of the year, Orientations, Research at Tech Days, the week before the start of the semester and the first week of class, meeting times fill up quickly.  We encourage you to contact the office to set appointments as early as possible.  If you have any questions about disbility accommodations or counseling services.

Below you will find the proceedures for requesting accommodations, request for disability, the documenation policy and a letter to parents.  Please review the information, complete the Student Request for Information and submit along with documenation to OCDS via email disability@nmt.edu or fax 575-835-6001 before your first meeting.
